Setting : Where and when is the story set? Setting represents both the physical location but also the time i. Character : A person or animal or really anything personified. There can be one main character or many, and often there are secondary characters, but not always. Plot : The events that happen in a story are called the plot. In a plot you typically find an introduction, rising action, a climax, the falling action, and a resolution. Plot is often represented as an arc.

However, before students can understand how these elements contribute to the overall meaning and effect of a story, they must first be able to identify the component parts confidently. So, what are these elements then? For the purpose of teaching our students, we can usefully divide these elements into two groups. The first group comprises the basic components of a story and is generally taught to elementary and middle school students, while the second group consists of more complex elements taught to more advanced students.

A short story is a short work of fiction. Fiction, as you know, is prose writing about imagined events and characters. Prose writing differs from poetry in that it does not depend on verses, meters or rhymes for its organization and presentation. Novels are another example of fictional prose and are much longer than short stories. Some short stories, however, can be quite long.

The parts of a story are both technical and elemental in nature, but these are what make up the necessary parts of a story that readers yearn for. There are infinite ways to write a book and tell a story. You can use endlessly different story structures and styles, but each story or novel is going to boil down to three fundamental elements: character, setting, and plot.

Elements of fiction and elements of story in general can be used by the reader to increase their enjoyment and understanding of different literary pieces. Once students are aware that all stories have elements of character, setting, plot, theme, point of view, style, and tone; they can be encouraged to ask themselves to identify the characteristics of each for a particular story. The more familiar they become with the different kinds of elements the better they will understand and critically analyze stories. Character is the mental, emotional, and social qualities to distinguish one entity from another people, animals, spirits, automatons, pieces of furniture, and other animated objects. Character development is the change that a character undergoes from the beginning of a story to the end. Young children can note this.
