Golden Girls Read A Thon: Read a book that includes female friendships
When I was 13 years old 10 Things I Hate About You was my favorite movie. I think I saw it in the theater at least 3x. I loved it! This movie was the first time I ever saw Heath Ledger and it was love at first sight. I was also still nursing my crush on Andrew Keegan(what ever happened to him) and I thought Julia Stiles was the coolest. Im tempted to rewatch the movie but I fear I wont enjoy it as much as an adult.
If Im being honest this book is probably a 2 star read but my nostalgia for the movie caused me to up the rating. 10 Things I Hate About You is a retelling of William Shakespeares The Taming Of The Shrew. Bianca the most popular sophomore at Padua High wants to date but cant until her older sister Kat does and Kat has no interest in dating or parties. So Cameron one of the 2 boys vying for Bianca comes up with a plan to get Kat to go out with school bad boy Patrick.
Despite the condensed and rushed nature of the book it did make me want to watch the movie again. If for no other reason than to see a young Heath Ledger.

One of the most prevalent of rom-com tropes is the random, unmotivated musical number. The drunken karaoke in 27 Dresses. But when it comes time for 10 Things I Hate About You to deliver its own take on the convention, it puts a little more thought into it. Patrick Verona Heath Ledger has thoroughly embarrassed Kat Stratford Julia Stiles on their first date by awkwardly turning down her attempt to kiss him. The whole thing ends with him goofily dodging two security guards. Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger are weightier, more thoughtful actors than usually get cast in these kinds of roles. Their naturalistic performances lend the otherwise fairly heightened film a realism akin to later, more grounded teen films like The Spectacular Now and The Edge Of Seventeen.
I regularly cite it as the last good rom-com. But when I revisited the beloved film earlier this year, I felt disappointed by it for the very first time. When I was a teenager, Kat Stratford was everything I wanted to be. I admired Kat, so of course I thought she should end up with Patrick; I saw him as the perfect guy. Of course, we are meant to watch Patrick learn to be a better human by hanging out with Kat. He pretends to like her favorite band and read Betty Friedan; they go paint paint-balling and bond over being misfits and rebels.

It was a breakthrough role for Stiles, Ledger, and Gordon-Levitt, all of whom were nominated for various teen-oriented awards. Ten years later, the film was adapted into a television series of the same title , which ran for twenty episodes and featured Larry Miller reprising his role as Walter Stratford from the film.
