All About Colour by Janice Lindsay

A fascinating and idiosyncratic journey through colour — its history, its meaning, and its effect on everyday life.

Janice Lindsay, an experienced colour designer with a background in art history and design, has always been passionate and curious about colour. In this book she shares a lifetime of discoveries about why colour, something we think will be simple to use and understand, is so complex. She takes us on a journey that combines history, biology, and interior design with personal insights from years of helping others choose colour and get it right. Along the way she recounts how a yellow was once made from cow’s urine and can be used as an intellectual stimulant. How blue used to be considered light black before it gained popularity and became more expensive than gold. And how vermilion red used to look better the longer it was ground — twenty years was just about long enough.

Lindsay explains how the invisible colour in daylight is as essential to our bodies as air and water. Colour is not just decoration, it has the power to change how we feel and function. She tells stories of colour-blind clients, of clients who thought they were happy living without colour until they found out what they were missing, and students whose marks improved once colour was added to the halls. Lindsay explains how we have a colour wisdom that is millions of years in the making based on nature encoded into our DNA and that we need to draw on that wisdom to humanize our built environments. Colour can make a house a home.

This book is about you. You and colour are linked in ways that we haven’t imagined. Beware: after reading this book you will never look at colour the same way again.

Get Colour Happiness

With a column in The Globe and Mail newspaper and her newly published book, Janice is a sought-after colour consultant for residential, commercial, and institutional projects. When I received her book and started reading it, I decided I had to interview her for my blog! And given that she is a Canadian, I thought it was even more appropriate that she should be my first interview; so I am pleased to introduce Janice Lindsay:. That would be like asking a mom which of her kids she liked best. One would be trust your instincts?

Interesting book, somewhat unfocused, mostly history of colour use and theory and decorating. But she doesn't use footnotes or a bib. All about Colour. Janice Lindsay. Well, Janice is one of those special guests in my Training this week! Janice above made us all special champagne cocktails and we all loved being in her beautiful home. Lesley Huntley, Roost Interior Design. Love this whimsical polka dot fabric on two slipper chairs in her living room. Beverly Leeck, Rescue Me Interiors. And as I said in this post, how you know if you have a fabulous chair is if it looks great just sitting there all alone.

In this book Janice shares a lifetime of discoveries about why colour, something we think will be simple to use and understand, is so complex. She takes us on a journey that combines history, biology, and interior design with personal insights from years of helping others choose colour and get it right. What makes it stand apart from other colour books is the volume of verifiable scientific information and the fascinating depth of knowledge that is crammed into it, quite apart from the delightful writing style that I found both compelling and convincing. There is seemingly endless information out there about the psychology of colour, often contradictory too. This book is very different because it hones in on the background of colour creation and its usage through many centuries, sharing well researched facts about historical origins going back to primitive man and the medieval and renaissance eras, through to the nineteenth century till today. No doubt that commitment is equally well expressed through her work in her own consultancy, Pink Colour and Design. Read this book and expect to find yourself revitalized, inspired and better educated about how and why colour influences our lives and our surroundings in ways you may never have imagined.
