Holy Herbs : Modern Connections to Ancient Plants by Sudhir AhluwaliaWith the growing trend towards ‘organic’ products and ‘coming back to nature’ worldwide, the rising interest in herbs and herbal remedies, in culinary use, health products, medicine, cosmetics and religious rituals is not surprising. A wide audience shares the fascination for Mother Earth’s generous bounty.
Herbs have a long history and find a mention in ancient texts. Do herbal products have relevance in modern medicine, such as in the treatment of cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and so on?
This book explores the historical, cultural, religious and scientific connection between the East and the West. With the author’s exposure to forestry training and research and knowledge drawn from the Bible, perhaps one of the biggest references for herbs, Holy Herbs stands at the right spot for tracing a global history of herbs from ancient to modern times.

King James Bible
Then God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you;. Then God said, "Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit after their kind with seed in them"; and it was so. He causes the grass to grow for the cattle, And vegetation for the labor of man, So that he may bring forth food from the earth,. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in them, after their kind; and God saw that it was good. One person has faith that he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats vegetables only. Better is a dish of vegetables where love is Than a fattened ox served with hatred.

Genesis - Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things. Read More Ezekiel - And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.
I wonder from time to time what our Buddhist, Muslim, or Jewish brethren, among others, think of the hoopla as Christians face a new millennium. Other religions and societies are into their third, fourth, or even fifth millennia. Regardless, the new millennium is an opportunity for reflection and anticipation: What have we done to the earth, to its flora and fauna? How accurately have we measured progress in diet, medicine, and health care? As we move into the third Christian millennium, we may be ready to rekindle a medical as well as spiritual explanation of the herbs and plants that have been with us for as many as six millennia. The Bible mentions plants that were part of everyday life in ancient Israel and its Mediterranean neighbors.
Here in this vividly poetic excerpt from the Songs of Solomon a love story between Jesus, the God of Israel, and his chosen nation of priests — the Israelites we get an idea of the wide variety of fruits and herbs that were sought after and valuable:. A garden inclosed is my sister, my spouse; a spring shut up, a fountain sealed. Thy plants are an orchard of pomegranates, with pleasant fruits; camphire, with spikenard,. Spikenard and saffron; calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense; myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices:. A fountain of gardens, a well of living waters, and streams from Lebanon.
What does the Bible say about? You shall have them for food. Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.
People have been using herbs for thousands of years for their culinary and medicinal benefits. I want to tell you about some of the most popular herbs of the Bible and what they were traditionally used for as well as how they are still used to this day. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. John The aloe vera plant has been used for thousands of years.
