Australia: The Lucky Country - Multiculturalism and Immigration
Quotes About Unity
Less than a month ago, millions of Australians celebrated our national day. Among the most enthusiastic participants were our newest Australian citizens. Thirteen thousand people enthusiastically took the pledge of commitment to this nation. I've seen people, wearing the national dress of their homeland, clasping an Australian flag and welling-up with tears as they promise to uphold and obey Australian values and laws. They serve as a reminder of what I term ''the genius of Australian multiculturalism''. It is presently fashionable to declare multiculturalism dead or to blame it for crime and terrorism.
Twenty-five years ago, I was preparing to immigrate to Australia. I had heard about the 'White Australia' policy, stayed out of the sun and went shopping for make-up a shade lighter than the one I normally wore. I never imagined then that one day I would stand to speak in praise of Australian's achievements in managing diversity. But here I am, and I am really pleased to be here. This afternoon, I would like to tell you a story about a unique media organisation and the way it has been contributing to making Australia a more cohesive, a more equitable and a more harmonious society. I will try to paint a picture of the Australia I came to in and today's Australia and I will argue that one of the causes of the change has been this unique media organisation: the Special Broadcasting Service, Australia's multicultural and multilingual broadcaster, MY SBS. The Australia I came to in was very different from today's Australia.
Despite its racist past, high and diverse immigration and enormous cultural and religious diversity, contemporary Australia is a highly successful and well functioning multicultural society. The paper will analyse the reasons behind this success. The focus will then shift to the unique Australian culture that has emerged today, combining the elements of past and present. The paper will explore policies, institutions and laws that facilitated the development of modern Australia and its national character. Finally, the paper will examine the key and sometimes unique factors that have made the success of Australian multiculturalism possible. Some of these factors may not be present in other societies, thus making advancement of social harmony difficult.

Since the s, the Australian State has adopted multiculturalism as a framework for policies of cultural expression and national representation. Over subsequent decades, the idea of multiculturalism developed from a simple depiction of a federation of ethnic cultures towards the celebration of hybridity and diversity, and this change has been reflected in the ways performers have used genres of music to characterize the nation. Shifting policies of the Australia Council, the most important arts funding body, have been influential. In its initial period the Council fostered folk-rock fusion bands and cultural revival genres. Fusion bands were seen as representing the multicultural nation, and cultural revival genres as authentic manifestations of stable cultural communities.
