Dear John by Nicholas Sparks

An angry rebel, John dropped out of school and enlisted in the Army, not knowing what else to do with his life--until he meets the girl of his dreams, Savannah. Their mutual attraction quickly grows into the kind of love that leaves Savannah waiting for John to finish his tour of duty, and John wanting to settle down with the woman who has captured his heart.

But 9/11 changes everything. John feels it is his duty to re-enlist. And sadly, the long separation finds Savannah falling in love with someone else.

Dear John, the letter read... and with those two words, a heart was broken and two lives were changed forever. Returning home, John must come to grips with the fact that Savannah, now married, is still his true love—and face the hardest decision of his life.

Not having read anything about the film or book beforehand, I went into the cinema with no expectations, though I was worried it might be a soppy, pull-at-the-heartstrings epic like The Notebook. This wasn't the case.

If The Notebook is on television, I'll watch it. I cried during A Walk to Remember. I own a few of Sparks' books and enjoyed them. I will also admit that I have not read Dear John , but I was a teensy bit excited to review the movie anyway. I had prepared myself for one good cry, but only one. Wowza was I under-prepared.

Dear John is the fifth of Nicholas Sparks' books to be turned into a movie, which means that even if you haven't read a word of his novels, if you are a regular moviegoer you know what to expect. A wistful love story, tender feelings recorded in letters or notebooks and read aloud and then, just as you're wondering what kind of a gown the prospective bride or promgoer will pick out, someone vital to the story will bonk his head, fall off a boat and die. Tragedy does not always arrive by boat, of course. That only happened in Message in a Bottle , in which Kevin Costner was sacrificed, despite his considerable star power. Sometimes it's a mudslide Nights in Rodanthe , the worst of the five or a secret illness A Walk to Remember , the sweetest or class warfare The Notebook , the sexiest. Either way, the guiding hand of Erich Segal is always present, and the cast must include an Ali MacGraw type, someone famous taking a mortal or psychological hit for the sake of getting our hankies wet.

The winner Sunny skies once again deterred audiences from congregating in darkened cinemas, but there was nevertheless a star performer among the new releases. Dear John, a romantic drama adapted from a novel by The Notebook author Nicholas Sparks, benefited from a clear audience to target with marketing and publicity. The result enhances Channing Tatum's status as a box-office star. Dear John's success is also good news for Sparks. The film went on to succeed on DVD, thanks to strong word-of-mouth endorsement. The chasing pack Political conspiracy thriller The Ghost presented a distribution challenge to local distributor Optimum, since the adaptation of Robert Harris's novel privileges talk over action; director Roman Polanski is in the news for the wrong reasons; and stars Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan are no guarantors of box office. Distributor Sony could not have asked for a bigger publicity effort by the film-making duo, although the pair's insistence that their film is a drama rather than a comedy might have given audiences pause.
